KUALA LUMPUR (June 12): Malaysia logged 5,793 new cases today, down from 6,849 yesterday, while daily recoveries reached a new high of 8,334, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
This brought the country’s cumulative confirmed Covid-19 infections to 652,204, while total recoveries rose to 572,113, Noor Hisham said in a statement today.
There were also 76 fatalities linked to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the pandemic's death toll in Malaysia to 3,844. The fatalities were reported in Selangor (27), Kuala Lumpur (nine), Negeri Sembilan (nine), Johor (eight), Sabah (five), Melaka (five), Sarawak (four), Kelantan (three), Perak (one), Penang (one), Pahang (one) and Labuan (one).
As for the new infections, 5,787 were local transmissions, while six were imported cases. Of the domestic transmissions, 83.8% or 4,851 involved Malaysians, while 16.2% (936) involved foreign nationals. Among the imported cases, four were Malaysians.
Meanwhile, as daily Covid-19 recoveries surpassed new infections at 8,334, the number of active cases carrying high transmission risk fell to 76,247 from 78,864 seen yesterday.
Across the country, there were 914 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), of whom 459 required breathing assistance.
Selangor again topped the list of states with the highest number of new cases today at 1,582, followed by Negeri Sembilan (618 infections), Sarawak (569), Kuala Lumpur (559), Johor (504) and Sabah (378), Noor Hisham said. Next came Kelantan with 337 cases, followed by Labuan (250), Perak, (218), Penang (198), Melaka (178), Kedah (171), Pahang (121), Terengganu (82), Putrajaya (23) and Perlis (five).
Meanwhile, the ministry identified 24 new infection clusters in the past 24 hours, 15 of which involved workplaces, while seven were community clusters and two were from detention centres.
Of the workplace clusters, four were found in Selangor, followed by two each in Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Penang and Johor, and one each in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu and Kedah.
The remaining two clusters are detention centre clusters, namely the Tembok Bukit Mertajam cluster in Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang with 26 infections, and the Jalan Bachok-Tok Bali cluster that spans Bachok, Kota Baru and Tumpat, Kelantan with 30 cases.
