KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 23): Disrupted by technology in the last few years, Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd has been losing pay-tv customers to real-time content pirates. Yet, its new CEO Henry Tan believes the group will only become stronger as it recasts itself as an Asean consumer and content company.

In terms of content, many will recall that Astro came up with a number of successes including The Journey, OlaBola, Hantu Kak Limah, Paskal, Abang Long Fadil and Polis Evo.

Tan sees potential in Malaysia’s ability to create content for Malaysian viewers and beyond.

As for raising its profile as a consumer company, Astro hopes to leverage on  data analytics and its other assets to grow its home shopping channel Go Shop, for which Tan has big plans.

Will Astro succeed in resetting itself to face the challenges brought on by technology? More importantly for shareholders, will it be able to maintain its dividend payments?

Read what Tan has to say on Astro’s new journey in the latest issue of The Edge.
