KUALA LUMPUR: French power generation and electrical grid service provider Alstom and TNB Janamanung Sdn Bhd (TNBJ) have successfully achieved the synchronisation of the 1,000mw Manjung supercritical coal-fired power plant in Perak to the Malaysian grid.

“The first production of electricity by this new unit is a major achievement and demonstrates Alstom’s ability to complete the project in full compliance with the contract,” said the French engineering giant in a statement.  

Alstom’s scope in the contract covers engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the 1,000mw steam turbine, a generator, supercritical boiler and auxiliaries, the distribution of the ALSPA Series 6 control system and advanced environmental control systems to cut emissions.    

“We would like to thank Tenaga Nasional Bhd and [its subsidiary TNBJ] for their collaboration with Alstom towards this successful synchronisation and we will continue to deliver Alstom’s commitment on its proven expertise in integrated power solutions,” said Jean-Marc Jaillet, Alstom project director for Manjung 4.  

The 1,000mw Manjung plant is the first coal-fired power plant in Malaysia utilising Alstom’s advanced equipment and technology, and is the single-largest unit in Southeast Asia.

Alstom said the plant will produce sufficient electricity to power nearly two million households in Malaysia and is aligned with the country’s energy diversification policy to create a more balanced portfolio of power generation sources that includes gas, coal and renewable power energy in the country.
