KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): AirAsia Bhd announced that it would start direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Maldives with a three-time weekly frequency beginning this October 22.

According to AirAsia's (fundamental: 0.2; valuation: 1.4) press release today, the budget airline is introducing the route due to demand from travellers.

AirAsia's head of commercial Spencer Lee said: “Maldives tops the list of ‘must-visit’ destinations for most people and the requests for flights to Maldives have been extremely overwhelming."

“AirAsia is proud to announce that we will commence our flights to Maldives, making us the only airline that flies direct to Maldives from Kuala Lumpur. The flight schedule for this Kuala Lumpur–Maldives route allows travellers from all other regions such as Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia to connect easily using our Fly-Thru service," Lee said.

According to him, seats to the beach destination are now available for booking online at airasia.com with all-in-fares from as low as RM169 one way.

The promotion is ongoing until July 26, 2015 for travel between October 22, 2015 and August 31, 2016.

Today, AirAsia shares rose one sen or 0.7% to RM1.37 at 3.19pm. The fifth most-actively traded stock on Bursa Malaysia saw some 19 million shares transacted.
