KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 16): New Covid-19 cases increased slightly to 7,509 as of noon on Saturday, compared with 7,420 infections on Friday, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

According to him, of the 7,509 new cases reported on Saturday, only 116 infections or 1.5% were in category three, four or five, while another 7,393 infections or 98.5% were in category one or two.

"Of the total number of new cases, 16 were imported cases, while 7,493 were local transmissions," he said in a statement on the Covid-19 situation on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham added that 9,531 recoveries were recorded for the day, surpassing the tally of new infections.

He said 630 confirmed Covid-19 cases were undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit, with 281 of them requiring respiratory assistance.

According to him, nine new clusters were identified on Saturday, with four involving the workplace, followed by three education clusters, one community cluster and a high-risk group cluster.
