KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 22): Malaysia registered another 3,631 new Covid-19 cases today, with 18 more fatalities — which marks the pandemic's' deadliest day in the country. The previous highest number of daily deaths was 16, recorded just two weeks earlier on Jan 8.

The new additions pushed cumulative coronavirus infections in the country to 176,180, while the death toll climbed to 660, according to Ministry of Health (MOH) director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of the 18 new fatalities, with the youngest aged 32 and the oldest being 93, one was a foreigner. Eight of the fatalities were reported in Selangor, three each in Sabah and Kuala Lumpur, two in Sarawak, and one each in Johor and Penang.

Meanwhile, 2,554 Covid-19 patients were discharged today, raising total recoveries nationwide to 132,706 or 75.3% of overall cases.

But as recoveries continued to lag new infections, active cases that carry transmission risks touched  new high of 42,814.

Of the new cases, Selangor contributed the most with 782 cases, followed by Johor (466) and Sabah (453).

And 89 of the new cases today came from clusters linked to prisons, lock-ups and immigration depot centres, namely the Jalan Harapan prison cluster in Selangor (51 cases), Tembok Mempaga cluster in Pahang (15), Tembok Nanas cluster in Johor (12 cases), Seberang Perai prison cluster in Penang (five), Tembok Renggam cluster in Johor (four) and Tembok Kemus cluster in Melaka (two).

12 more new clusters identified

The Ministry has also identified 12 new infection clusters in the country, of which seven were linked to workplaces and one was a prison cluster.

This means there are now 335 active clusters in the country, out of the total 713 identified — of which 378 have been declared closed with no new infections reported after 28 days.

The clusters that reported the highest number of new cases today were the Pasai cluster in Sarawak (112 cases), the Muda construction site cluster in Kuala Lumpur (93 cases), and the Seri Bayu cluster in Johor (81 cases).
