KUALA LUMPUR (May 19): The High Court here today set June 29 and 30 as well as July 1 for former federal territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s RM2 million bribery case defence trial.

High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan today set the dates for the trial. Deputy public prosecutor Julia Ibrahim, who leads the prosecution, agreed to the dates.

Julia also informed Mohamed Zaini that the defence has three more witnesses to call and the process will take three days.

“I don’t think there will be a lot of cross-examination on our part,” she told Mohamed Zaini.

Mohamed Zaini subsequently ordered the defence, led by Cains Tan, to submit witness statements to the prosecution one week before the aforementioned dates.

Tengku Adnan, 69, completed giving his evidence on March 5 this year. He chose to testify under oath from the witness stand when the defence proceedings commenced on Jan 17 this year.

On Oct 14 last year, the High Court ordered Tengku Adnan to enter his defence after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case.

Tengku Adnan was charged in his capacity as a public servant for accepting RM2 million in 2016 from businessman Tan Sri Chai Kin Kong, who is also the director of Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd (AKSB), via a Hong Leong Islamic Bank cheque belonging to AKSB.

It was reported that the cheque was later deposited into the CIMB Bank Bhd account of Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd in which Tengku Adnan had an interest, when it was known that AKSB had a connection with his official duties.

The offence was allegedly committed at CIMB Bank’s Pusat Bandar Damansara branch here on June 14, 2016.

Tengku Adnan is being charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, if convicted.
