KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 2): Global semiconductor equipment billings rose 38% year-on-year (y-o-y) to US$26.8 billion (about RM113.43 billion) in the third quarter of 2021 (3Q21) from US$19.38 billion a year earlier, said US-based Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).
SEMI in its Worldwide Semiconductor Equipment Market Statistics (WWSEMS) released on Wednesday (Dec 1) said the figure was an 8% rise from the prior quarter to register the fifth consecutive quarter-on-quarter record high.
SEMI president and chief executive officer Ajit Manocha said strong secular demand for chips across a wide range of markets including communications, computing, healthcare, online services and automotive fuelled this tremendous run of record quarterly growth for semiconductor equipment.
“The semiconductor industry has demonstrated great resiliency in the face of disruptive global challenges, including the chip shortage and ongoing [Covid-19] pandemic,” he said.
Compiled from data submitted by members of SEMI and the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ), the WWSEMS report is a summary of the monthly billings figures of the global semiconductor equipment industry.
