KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 30): The Malaysian government is looking to forfeit cash amounting over RM150,000, a vehicle and also landed properties from former executive director of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Casey Tang.

The cash amounting to RM156,500 comprises Tang's savings and current account balances at four banks — RM89,300 at Maybank Islamic Bhd, RM13,000 at CIMB Bank Bhd, RM600 at RHB Bank Bhd and RM53,600 at AmBank Bhd.

The vehicle is a Subaru XV2.01 seized in January 2021. The government is also looking to seize a bungalow in Bandar Kinrara and a shoplot in Bandar Puchong Jaya.

The notice in the gazette was issued on Aug 1, 2022, inviting any third parties to appear in person or be represented by a counsel to contest the forfeiture action before a hearing.

This is for the third parties to show cause as to why the properties should not be forfeited by the government.

The government filed the forfeiture suit against Tang — an associate of fugitive financier Low Taek Jho — in November 2021, in accordance with Subsection 61(2) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The matter came up for mention on Friday before High Court judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah. Tang was not represented while deputy public prosecutor Noor Zalizan Lazarous was present for the prosecution.

One third party was present on Friday. Maybank Islamic, which was represented by Muhammad Al Muazzim Azmi Amin, is claiming the bungalow.

Noor Zalizan asked the court for two weeks to hand over documents and supporting affidavits. The court set Oct 12 for next mention.

Tang is listed as a wanted person by the Malaysian authorities and his whereabouts are unknown.
