KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 8): The government has tabled the first reading of the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre Bill 2019.

Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby, Prime Minister's Department Minister (Law) Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the bill was part of the National Anti-Corruption Plan 2019-2023.

"The centre seeks to coordinate the efforts of 12 existing enforcement agencies, among others, the Royal Malaysian Police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and also Bank Negara in preventing and combating financial crimes, both domestically and internationally," the minister said.

Liew clarified the Anti-Financial Crime Centre does not have investigative powers of its own, but will serve as an integrated agency that coordinates action among all the law enforcement agencies.

He emphasised that this centre would address financial crimes such as money laundering.

The minister noted that the authorities are dealing with financial crimes, and "it is under control", while adding that the centre will help the government address the issue.

On who will helm the centre, Liew said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will recommend a candidate to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and that the premier would be advised.

"We will have an advisory board and an executive committee to advise the Prime Minister on various aspects of financial crimes. The executive board will have a director general and other board members," Liew explained.

He then clarified that there is no requirement for the appointment to be submitted to a Parliamentary select committee.

The second reading of the bill will be done at the current session of parliament.
