KUALA LUMPUR (June 16): Malaysia is among countries to have banned theatrical showings of the Pixar movie “Lightyear” as the movie depicts a same-sex relationship.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Wednesday (June 15) that the ban across fourteen markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia came as Walt Disney Co declined to remove depictions of a same-sex relationship, including a kiss between two married female characters.

Apart from Malaysia, the others who have banned the screening of the movie are the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Jordan, Indonesia, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Palestinian territories, Syria and Iraq.

Citing a Disney spokeswoman, WSJ said no decisions have been made beyond the theatrical release stage, and it isn’t known whether “Lightyear” would be shown in the markets on Disney+.

“Lightyear” is set for North American release this weekend.

It is Pixar’s 26th animated feature film and tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the toy space ranger who was the hero of Pixar’s first film, 1995’s “Toy Story”.

“Lightyear” is also the first Pixar movie to be released in theatres since 2020’s “Onward”, a feature about two elf brothers on a quest to contact their dead father that hit theatres five days before Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic.
