KUALA LUMPUR (April 16): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases jumped to 2,551, from 2,148 yesterday, with Sarawak once again accounting for the most cases at 960.

Selangor came next with 590 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur (245) and Kelantan (164), Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

He said the latest cases raised the number of confirmed infections in the country to 370,528.

Two Covid-19-related deaths were reported in the 24 hours up to noon today,  both in Selangor. This brings the country's pandemic death toll to 1,365.

Dr Noor Hisham said all but 29 of the new infections were locally transmitted, involving 10 Malaysians and 19 foreigners. A total of 1,524 recoveries were reported today, raising total recoveries to 350,563, or 94.6% of all cases. The number of active cases — which carry transmission risks — stood at 18,600. Of this, 227 patients are in intensive care units, with 91 requiring respiratory help. Dr noor Hisham also reported seven new infection clusters — three from workplaces, two in detention centres and one each in community and education centres. The workplace clusters are Jalan Sultan Iskandar (Sarawak), Jalan Balakong (Selangor) and Jalan Kia Peng (Kuala Lumpur). The detention centre clusters are DTI Sandakan (Sabah) and DTI Lenggeng (Negeri Sembilan). The sole community cluster is Jepak (Sarawak) and the education centre cluster is Sri Layang (Pahang). To date, Malaysia has identified 1,507 Covid-19 clusters, of which 1,161 have been declared ended, leaving 346 active clusters. The clusters that reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases today are Jalan Puncak Borneo (315 cases), Jalan Bambangan (99 cases) and DTI Sandakan (55 cases).
