KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 11): Malaysia's construction sector recorded RM27.24 billion worth of projects for the second quarter (2Q15), a 8.2% year-on-year rise compared to the RM25.17 billion in the previous corresponding quarter.

However, on the quarter-on-quarter basis, it recorded a decrease of 5.2% as compared to 28.74 billion in the preceding quarter (1Q15).

In a statement today, the Statistics Department said the rise was led by the non-residential buildings sub-sector which recorded 34.6%.

This was followed by the civil engineering sub-sector with 30.4%, the residential buildings sub-sector with 30.3% and the special trades sub-sector with 4.7%.

Geographically, the Statistics Department said Selangor continued to record the highest value of construction work done of RM6.61 billion or 24.3% among the states.

"This was followed by Wilayah Persekutuan with RM5.16 billion or 18.9%, Johor with RM5.03 billion or 18.5%, Sarawak with RM2.28 billion or 8.4% and Pulau Pinang with RM1.47 billion or 5.4%," the department said.

The contribution of these five states accounted for 75.5% of the total value of construction work done, it added.

In terms of project owner, the private sector continued to dominate the construction sector.

The private sector recorded a 66.9% share while the public sector accounted for the remaining 33.1%.
