SEPANG (June 1): Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB), the new company of Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS), has given the assurance today that there will be no capacity reduction of the entire domestic network run by MAS and its subsidiaries, Firefly and MASwings.

In his first press briefing today since joining the national carrier, MAS chief executive officer Christoph Muller said the domestic network of the group will "remain intact".

He added that MASwings will fully concentrate on the rural air services, while Firefly will continue to operate its turboprop operations out of Subang.

This comes at a time when MAS is sending out termination letters to its 20,000-odd staff as part of Khazanah Nasional Bhd's RM6 billion exercise to revamp the ailing national carrier.

According to Mueller, MAB has sent out 14,000 re-employment letters to MAS staff today, while another 6,000 won't be receiving the letter.

He said the new airline, MAB has applied for an airline operators' certificate (AOC) with the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia.

"MAS will stop trading on Sept 1, 2015," said Mueller, adding that the MH code will be transferred from the old company to the newco.
