KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 25): Perikatan Nasional (PN) has decided to play the Opposition role in the 15th Parliament to provide check and balance by not participating in the unity Government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement on Friday (Nov 25), PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin thanked Anwar for offering the coalition an opportunity to participate in the unity Government, but the former PM said it opts to play the role of the Opposition instead by bringing the people’s voice into Parliament and ensuring that the Government function with integrity and free from corruption.

However, to ensure stability in the country’s politics and the people’s welfare, Muhyiddin said PN is prepared to explore other forms of collaboration with the Government in the space of relationships between the current administration and the Opposition.

Earlier on Friday, Muhyiddin also congratulated Anwar for his appointment as the country's 10th PM.

“With the Federal Government now led by Pakatan Harapan, PN will play the role of check and balance in Malaysia’s Parliament by conveying the people’s voice, in line with the principle of parliamentary democracy,” he said in a Facebook post.

After the Palace named Anwar as the PM on Thursday, Muhyiddin was still sceptical of Anwar’s legitimacy, calling the PH chief to provide evidence of majority support from the Dewan Rakyat.

In response, Anwar has pledged to table a motion of confidence to kick-start the Parliament session on Dec 19.

It is worth noting that PN’s latest stance to be the Opposition came after the coalition's secretary general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin on Thursday, about an hour before the Palace named Anwar as the new PM, issued a statement saying that PN is willing to consider the proposal of forming a unity Government.

Hamzah’s statement was a U-turn from PN's earlier decision on Tuesday, after Muhyiddin had an audience with the King and rejected His Majesty’s proposal to form a unity Government with PH.
