KUALA LUMPUR: The Kelantan government has declared Sept 25 a public holiday to enable more people to cast their votes in the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, according to a report in an online portal.

The report said Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah criticised the decision of the Election Commission (EC) to hold election on a weekday, despite the suggestions by PAS to have the by-election on a weekend.

“To hold polling day on a workday is to deny the people their opportunity to vote, so the Kelantan state government has declared it a public holiday.

“We hope companies and employers of residents living outside Kelantan will also give voters the flexibility to come back and vote,” the online portal reported him as saying during a press conference at the PAS Pengkalan Kubor operation base in Kampung Getting.

Last Saturday, EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said that as a majority of Pengkalan Kubor residents are fishermen or farmers, voting on a weekday should not be a problem as they did not follow usual working hours.
