KUALA LUMPUR (July 8): Telekom Malaysia Bhd's (TM) unifi TV is looking to partner with over-the-top (OTT) media service providers to offer a variety of content in the future.

TM chief commercial officer Anand Vijayan said unifi TV is "working on a few things in this area (potential partnerships with OTT platforms)".

OTT platforms offer TV content through the internet instead of via traditional methods involving cable and broadcast systems, with notable examples including iTunes and Netflix.

Anand said at a virtual media briefing today that TM cannot share, for now, information regarding unifi TV's planned partnerships with other OTT platforms.

"Once we are ready, we will share (the updates) with the market. We have unifi TV, and the content being offered is changing very much.

"Unifi is so well placed in this entire game. Today, instead of using satellite, people want to throw their content via broadband. All OTT players are going into broadband," he said.

Currently, Unifi has over two million subscribers.

On the other hand, TM also has exceeded the target set under the National Digital Infrastructure Plan (Jendela) for the deployment of fixed broadband infrastructure to 168,000 premises for the first quarter ended March 31, 2021 (1QFY21).

Jendela was formulated to provide wider coverage and better quality of broadband experience while preparing the country for 5G technology that will be available by the end of this year.

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry in collaboration with TM has set up a special committee to identify areas without internet access or have poor coverage.

“At unifi, we are committed to deliver high speed broadband for all Malaysians through the Jendela initiative. For 1QFY21, we have delivered fibre ports to 238,000 premises in Malaysia.

“To us, Jendela is not just infrastructure fibre rollout, but more importantly it’s about enriching our customer experience. More than 60% of Streamyx customers will be migrated [to unifi] as soon as fibre [is] available in their areas.

“We want to improve our quality of services by migrating these customers to fibre,” said unifi head of consumer business segment Ahmad Nasri Mohamed.

At noon break, TM’s share price was down 10 sen or 1.65% to RM5.95, with some 619,500 shares changing hands. This gave the group a market capitalisation of RM22.45 billion.
