Young Malaysian leaders who are interested in sparking change through civic engagement are welcome to apply for the digital second phase of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Boot Camp 2020 that will be held in September.

The Boot Camp is organised by the Biji-biji Initiative, its education arm Me.reka and the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. It aims to spark national civic engagement through digital action and equip potential change-makers with a growth mindset and civic action toolkit.

Over the course of three weeks, chosen participants will attend various webinars, virtual classroom sessions, and consume educational and informative videos as well as articles. Civil society leaders and industry experts in the fields of civic engagement, communications, leadership and future technology will be providing content for the programme.

For safety reasons, the YSEALI Boot Camp will be held virtually this year. Individuals will apply in teams of two to four. They are not required to have participated in first phase to apply for the second phase of the Boot Camp.

From a pool of 10 teams (up to 40 participants), five promising teams will be chosen by the end of this phase to receive seed funding of RM6,000 each, technological development assistance and a three-month internship to help launch their campaigns.

“YSEALI’s youthful leaders are resilient and I strongly believe they will adapt and overcome any given circumstances. As evidenced by the success of prior Boot Camps, we felt it was only right to continue the momentum and relaunch a virtual conference-style experience. These sessions will encompass a variety of digital tools and media to focus on helping local community leaders to plan, launch and support well-rounded civic engagement campaigns,” said Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, a Biji-biji Initiative co-founding partner and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Me.reka.
