If nouvelle cuisine is your thing, France’s wine capital Bordeaux has dining, shopping and leisure options, besides tours within its historic heart. For simpler pursuits, follow the path of pilgrims in Camino, northwest Spain, and walk your way through rural villages and old towns known for thermal water, stone walls, wooden buildings, cathedrals, cottages and farmhouses, where friendly owners eagerly prepare hearty meals for weary guests.

Washington, DC, federal capital of the USA, is a capital destination for different things: food (you might catch a celebrity or more at Old Ebbitt Grill, DC’s oldest bar and restaurant); performances (John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts); history and art (Lincoln Memorial and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden); and architecture (Union Station has vaulted interior spaces and a view of Capitol Hill).

Closer to home, Hoi An province in Vietnam offers river cruises, pottery and lantern-making sessions, new resorts, golfing grounds and a casino, fresh seafood and of course, steaming bowls of pho.
