3 worthy shows to see

National Geographic: Symphony For Our World

National Geographic has gifted the world’s population with over 130 years’ worth of ground-breaking footage. From the rarest animals to the vastest oceans, National Geographic’s breathtaking cinematography brings us one step closer to fully understanding our planet, each day. This month, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and Malaysian Institute of Art’s Mixed Voices Choir have collaborated to create a phenomenal, multimedia-symphonic performance. In a unique fusion of science and artistry, National Geographic’s arresting visuals are combined with orchestral and choral sounds, paying homage to the wondrous splendour of Planet Earth. See the show on tomorrow at 8.30pm or on Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are priced between RM113 and RM226. Visit www.mpo.com.my for more information.

Shanghai Sisters @ Bobo KL

This weekend, Bobo KL presents the Shanghai Sisters, comprising talented musicians Janet, Winnie and May. Paying homage to the music of the good old golden days, the group is set to deliver an enjoyable mix of Old Shanghai, Grand Malaya and Romantic Hollywood, backed by an ensemble lead by Tay Cher Siang of WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble. Head on over to Bobo KL, 65-1, Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur tonight at 9.30pm to catch this performance by the Shanghai Sisters. Call (03) 2092 5002 to make reservations. Admission fee is RM60, and RM45 for diners of the Bobo Dining Room.

Yield @ FreedomFilmFest

FreedomFilmFest, Malaysia’s leading international human rights film festival, is screening its final film of the 2018 festival tonight. Titled Yield, this ethnographic inquiry was filmed over a period of five years, and depicts the lives of nine children living in dire Third World conditions. The festival’s website states that, in this documentary, “Toil is translated as an algorithm of nameless faces, actions and spaces. The reduction of distinct narratives puts the weight not on the individuals represented per se but on the relations of the powerless”. Catch the screening tonight at 8pm. Visit www.freedomfilm.my to learn more.

1 way to reduce, reuse, recycle

Neubodi Bra Drive

Reduce, reuse, recycle — this general rule of thumb should apply to all aspects of life, and in this, Neubodi agrees. According to their website, “One in four women in Malaysia confessed to owning more than 10 bras in their lingerie drawers, with more than 80% of them admitting that their unworn bras are either brand new, or the sizing simply does not fit anymore. Having said that, only 15% of women ever recycle or donate these bras away. The rest, goes into landfills, giving textiles one of the poorest recycling rates of any reusable materials”. The brand’s annual Bra Drive is back — it collects second-hand bras, from which wearable ones go to rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak, and also Africa and Nepal, and unusable ones are recycled into fibres or fuel to power cement kilns and industrial boilers. Reward yourself with a 25% voucher for dropping off your old garments until Nov 4. Visit www.neubodi.com for more details, as well as to find out where the drop-off bins are located.
