KUALA LUMPUR: A group of eight prominent Malaysians, led by JUST president Dr Chandra Muzaffar, yesterday launched Yayasan 1Malaysia, an independent, non-profit foundation aimed at initiating and supporting national unity programmes as well as engaging the rakyat on the 1Malaysia concept propounded by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Apart from Chandra, the other co-founders who also sit on its board of trustees include Malaysian Airline System Bhd managing director Datuk Seri Idris Jala, AirAsia group chief executive Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes, ISIS director-general Dr Mahani Zainal Abidin, and National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

The others are Datuk Dr Ismail Ibrahim, the holder of the Sheikh Abdullah Fahim Chair at the Islam Hadhari Institute, UKM, Tan Sri Dr Jemilah Mahmood, the president of the Malaysian Medical Relief Society, and Prof Emeritus Datuk KJ Ratnam, a member of the board of trustees of MIER and Yayasan Tun Razak.

Noorhaini Hirawani Mohd Noor has been appointed Yayasan 1Malaysia’s first chief executive officer. At the launch yesterday, Chandra said Najib had agreed to be the patron of Yayasan 1Malaysia.
