KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 29): A muted Merdeka it may be with the present lockdowns in place, but it doesn't mean the occasion is not worthy of celebration.

Indeed, the last 18 months have provided Malaysians with the chance for some soul-searching as we have learnt to appreciate all the things about our nation that we've taken for granted in the past.

In an effort to remain positive, Options' special issue in conjunction with Merdeka celebrates all the things we love about our country.

From paying homage to our Paralympic athletes presently in Tokyo to our medical frontliners who have tirelessly been fighting the pandemic, this list also highlights destinations like Johor’s Desaru Coast and Penang's Cheong Fatt Tze's 'Blue Mansion' that have received international accolades.

We also uncovered secrets that even locals may not have known — Qin Xing Ling Cultural Village in Ipoh, for example, has a secluded jewel of a lake that is encircled by beautiful limestone caves.

There is no feting Malaysia without food: Check out the numerous local chilli brands that are blazing their own trail in our backyard; the various iterations of nasi lemak that keep your hunger pangs at bay; and the decades-old Guan Heong biscuit shop in Ipoh that is perpetuating our yum cha tradition until today.

From innovative brands to historical landmarks and unique hybrid cultures, our alphabetical list of 50 makes its way through all 14 states and highlights the best our country has to offer, reminding us all that there is much to be thankful for.
