KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 10): Malaysia today reported 2,234 Covid-19 infections, a new record since the pandemic started in January, with Selangor registering the highest number of new cases among all the States at 1,428.

The country’s previous record high was 2,188 cases reported on Nov 24, with most of the cases from the Top Glove-linked Teratai cluster in Klang, Selangor.

Meanwhile, the country’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 396, after three more fatalities were announced today.

Today, 1,331 cases in Selangor were confirmed from screenings of close contacts of Covid-19 positive patients and the Covid-19 clusters, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of this total, 1,239 cases were detected from the clusters, while the remaining 92 cases came from screening of close contacts.

“Most of the positive cases reported in Selangor today were detected among workplace clusters especially the Seruling cluster [involving three districts namely Klang, Hulu Selangor and Petaling] and the Hentian cluster [in Hulu Langat],” said Dr Noor Hisham in his statement.

The two clusters made up a total of 1,157 new infections, where 842 cases came from the Seruling cluster while 315 cases came from the Hentian cluster.

Dr Noor Hisham said daily cases in Selangor are expected to remain high due to massive screenings conducted by the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) among foreign workers, followed by proactive actions taken by employers in the Klang Valley.

“The confirmed cases have been isolated at the Covid-19 Low Risk Quarantine and Treatment Centre (MAEPS 2.0) and Sungai Buloh Hospital, while contact tracing and active case detection are still ongoing,” he said.

After Selangor, Sabah recorded 274 cases while Kuala Lumpur has 136 cases.

Other than that, 160 cases were detected from Covid-19 related prison clusters and temporary detention centres, including the Tembok cluster in Kedah with 104 cases, the Bakti cluster in Negeri Sembilan (45 cases), the Rumah Merah cluster in Sabah (eight), and the PTS Sibuga cluster in Sabah (three).

As the total number of Covid-19 cases soared to 78,499, the latest tally of active cases which carry high transmission risks climbed to 11,867 after two consecutive days of dropping below the 11,000 mark.

On the flip side, 1,112 Covid-19 patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of people who have recovered from Covid-19 to 66,236.

As for the fatalities, two deaths were reported in Sabah while another was reported in Labuan. These involved two men and one woman who aged between 26 and 72 years. Two of them had health complications such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, heart disease, chronic lung disease, asthma, and bronchiectasis.

To date, 124 patients are being treated in intensive care, while 60 of them are on ventilator support.
