KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 5): Former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah will take the stand this morning as a defence witness in the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Mohd Irwan will be the third defence witness after Najib and former AmBank relationship manager Krystle Yap.

Najib has been a witness since Dec 3 last year to defend himself against charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and laundering of RM42 million from SRC.

Najib and Mohd Irwan are jointly facing six charges of criminal breach of trust involving RM6.64 billion of government funds for payments to Abu-Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Co.

Najib and Mohd Irwan claimed trial on Oct 25 last year to six counts of misappropriating the government funds. The offences were allegedly committed between Dec 21, 2016 and Dec 18, 2017.

Part of the funds has been slated for certain purposes including the management expenditure of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, besides subsidy and cash assistance reported under Malaysia's Budget 2017 allocation.

It was reported that the monies were channelled to 1Malaysia Development Bhd instead, to repay its debts including US$1.2 billion to the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund in April 2017.

Mohd's Irwan’s testimony is set to take the whole day with the defence conducting its examination-in-chief and the prosecution conducting its cross-examination of the witness.

The trial is set to begin at 9am.
