KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said on Monday (Oct 11) a total of 2,286 students from higher education institutions out of the 1.15 million students from the segment were not vaccinated against Covid-19 due to health conditions as of Friday (Oct 8).

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat or the Parliament's lower house on Monday, Noraini said 951,739 students out of the 1.15 million students had been fully vaccinated against the pandemic as of Oct 1, 2021.

Among higher education institutions’ staff, she said, "a total of 117,721 people or 90% have received a two-dose (Covid-19) vaccination.”

Noraini was responding to a query from member of Parliament of Johor Bahru Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who had earlier asked about the current status of the Covid-19 vaccination programme for higher education students.

According to Noraini, if the presence of unvaccinated students is unavoidable, higher education institutions will have to ensure that stringent measures are taken to contain the spread of Covid-19.

She said the measures include a Covid-19 swab test for each student three days before returning to campus followed by regular Covid-19 self-tests by the individual.

"Moreover, the ministry is giving priority to only higher education institution students and citizens with two doses of vaccination to return to campus in stages,” she said.
